BLK AND
A pop-up gallery that reclaims and reactivates
Anchored on August 28th—a date etched into Black history through moments of both pain and progress—the event honors the past while investing in the future of Black creativity by reminding us that our Historic Neighborhood Districts are vibrant hubs for cultural expression, economic opportunity, and collective memory.
Hosted in the heart of the Historic 4th Avenue Corridor, BLK AND featured emerging Black visual artists across disciplines, transforming an underutilized storefront into a gallery-quality space. Art filled the walls. Beats and conversation filled the air. And for many attendees, it was their first time visiting this deeply significant part of the city.
The evening culminated in a participatory public art installation where guests finished the statement:
“I am Black and…”
The results were as expansive as they were affirming—an ever-growing chorus of identity, pride, vulnerability, and joy.
BLK AND proved that spaces rooted in legacy can also be platforms for bold, contemporary expression. More than a gallery, it was a reclamation of place—and a reminder that Black futures deserve to be seen, celebrated, and supported in full color.
